I have fond memories of the Zellers and the Zellers Diner, that once occupied the space where the new multi-attraction Volt Raceway operates. As you step inside, you are in amazement of the sheer size of the building,  was Zellers that big? It must have been!

Directly to the right is a bowling alley that they are working tirelessly on.  I imagine the constant sound of bowling will add to the appeal and excitement inside the venue.

The main counter is the centre, and a small arcade is on the left side.  We were there celebrating my brother’s birthday, and our plan was one hour of axe throwing, followed by dinner.

The main event for us,  Axe Throwing

I was apprehensive going Axe throwing; I’m not a spring chicken, and my back was still sore from shoveling a driveway out of the snowmegedon earlier in the week. I had never thrown axe before, and my expectation was a large traditional axe with a long handle.  I was pleasantly surprised to see smaller axes available for us.  After gaining experience with a few rounds, the game master supplied us with another type of axe and throwing ninja stars, also known as Shuriken.

The ninja stars were my preferred projectile. I grasped the weapon carefully and released it with an assiduous whip of the wrist, giving me a sense of play as a “samurai.”

We took turns, and all three of us in our party successfully hit the targets, some rounds more than others.  I discovered a heavier axe towards the end, and I enjoyed the weight and hit a bullseye. There were several targets and games you could toggle through, and you could score yourself via their keyboard, which linked to a score screen on top of the target.

Quickly, our hour was up, and we moved on to the bar/restaurant area. Undecided, we perused the menu and selected nachos with jalapeños, nachos without jalapeños and a burger and fries. The food was wonderful, and the service by the bartenders was outstanding.

Although it was a very enjoyable experience at Volt Raceway, something felt missing and definitely unfinished. There were large areas of the building that were underutilized and open spaces with nothing .  The place was lacking an overall atmosphere but has so much potential, I truly wish for it to be successful. Most definitely worth a visit, perhaps after they get the bowling alley completed and a few of their growing pains worked out.
